Group Bible Studies By Telephone

About:

What is the
Bible Caller Club?

Daily @ 8pm Eastern (Except Wednesdays)

Imagine the shared “party line” of the 1940’s and 50’s, but for Bible study. What if you could pick up your telephone in the evenings, and chat with a friendly group of like-minded believers to share prayer requests, and study a passage of scripture together?

This is the idea of the Bible Caller Club. It’s a short Bible study and fellowship to reconnect, recharge, and encourage each other every evening. If you don’t feel comfortable joining in the discussion, that’s okay. You can just listen or ask for prayers. The Bible Caller Club is perfect for all types of people, no matter your knowledge level or how outgoing you are. If you are seeking God’s Word, you are welcome here.

What happens during a club meeting?

Meetings:

Everyone calls in to our club’s dedicated party line at 8pm Eastern Daylight Time (except Wednesdays). We take prayer requests, and chat for a moment as we wait for people to arrive, all the while welcoming people joining us for the first time. You do not need to talk if you don’t feel comfortable, you can just listen.

We then start the study by reading the assigned passage for the day. Then we ask 4 basic study questions (which are always the same; see below for the questions) to get at the heart of the passage and its application.

We then conclude the study with a prayer over the lesson and the requests from earlier. Afterward, those who wish to chat for a few minutes stay on the line and catch up with each other. It really does feel like a family.

What do we study, and what is the process?

The Study:

What We Study:

We study the New Testament in its entirety every year. Every chapter, and every passage. If you stay in the club for a whole year, you will have a solid understanding of the entire New Testament and how to live it out!

How We Study:

While the Bible has many events and characters, and sometimes feels overwhelming, it really is a book all about the RELATIONSHIP between God and mankind. When we view each passage as fundamentally being about this conflict, this tension between God and man, and the God-offered resolution of this conflict, then things come into spiritual focus immediately.

The Questions We Ask Every Time:

When we study, we are always aiming to answer 4 questions to get to the heart of the passage:

  1. What is happening in this passage?
This question, and its answer, force us to slow down and understand the CONTENT of the passage. The characters, the actions, the conflict. We will often read and re-read the passage and its larger context to understand the content and purpose of the specific section we’re working with.

  2. What is God revealing about humanity?
When you view the Bible as a book about the relationship between God and mankind, then you will see how every passage is God revealing something about us, our nature, our needs, our shortcomings, or our future. In answering this question honestly, we begin to see humanity (and ourselves) through the eyes of God. You can then ask yourself, does this describe ME?

  3. What is God revealing about Himself?
Since the Bible is God’s way of opening our hearts to bridge the gap between God and humanity, you can view the book as a love letter. He WANTS us to know Him. To know how He feels, what He’s doing, and how He’s working toward reconciling Himself and His creation. As we ask this question about God when we study, our eyes are opened to His true nature and character. You can then ask yourself, do I view God in this way?

  4. How should my life change?

After answering the questions about humanity and about God, there will always be some sort of tension revealed: Need versus providence. Pain versus comfort. Evil versus judgement. Worry versus assurance. Sin versus sacrifice. The two parts always fit together like a puzzle piece, and the hinge between them becomes the application. This point becomes what we DO as a result of what we’ve learned about ourselves and about God. How do we bring the two pieces together?

FAQ:

What are some of the frequently asked questions about the club?

  • No, the club is completely free for the time being. If our operating costs rise substantially in the future (due to high demand), we may need to impose a small fee or donation system, but as of now that is not necessary.

However, if you do not have unlimited long-distance calling with your telephone provider, there may be fees associated with the call, so make sure to check with your carrier about your long-distance usage.

  • That is perfectly fine! Many people may feel comfortable listening to the study and discussion, while not commenting themselves. There is no pressure at all, and we want everyone to feel welcome to be here, no matter how much they plan to contribute to the study. We also understand that some nights you may feel energized and enthusiastic about the study, and may comment a lot, whereas other nights may be different and you’d rather just listen. There is nothing wrong with that.

  • No, certainly not. You can attend how ever many or as few club meetings as you wish. We understand that people lead busy lives, and you may only have one day a week to spare. This is fine, and we do not require anyone to commit to being at every study in order to remain part of the club.

  • Right now, for safety reasons, the club is taking only new members who have completed the registration process on our website, and been accepted. If you would like to invite someone you know to join the study, they must register and be accepted in order to join the club. If someone tries to dial in to the club without having been approved, we will not admit them into the meeting. This is to ensure the meetings remain a safe and uplifting place for all involved.

  • We never get into debates during the club meetings. While there may sometimes be differences in theological understanding, we always try to stay in the context of the passage being studied and draw Truth directly from that passage, and direct everything through that lens. Almost always, there is a common ground the host can connect things with, and we can move forward without argument.

If anything ever escalated to an argument, we would immediately mute the people engaging in the argument and move on in the study. This is not to say we don’t listen to other’s perspectives, as we think that everyone can bring a valuable perspective to the table, and there is always common ground and a way to connect. We allow differences in opinion, but we will not allow any arguing or debating.

  • We are a non-denominational Christian ministry. We believe God’s Word is authoritative and contains all we need for salvation. We believe God created the universe through the Word. We believe that the Word, God in the flesh, came to earth as a man named Jesus, that He died for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day. We believe that salvation is an un-earned gift of God’s grace for sinners through faith and the blood of Jesus Christ, and that His gift of grace is extended to us upon our obedience to the gospel, the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus (1 Corinthians 15:1-5), which we obey through repentance, baptism, and newness of life (Romans 6:1-5). We believe upon this obedience we receive salvation for eternal life, and the gift of God’s Holy Spirit to help us live out Jesus’ mission of love and service and evangelism in this world while we await the second coming of Jesus. We believe Jesus will return and judge the world according to His Word, and that many will be lost eternally due to their disobedience, while those who remained faithful will receive an eternal reward with God.

  • The average meeting lasts from 30-50 minutes, depending on amount of prayer requests and comments in the study.

  • You can send a message to us on our website (www.BibleCallerClub.com/contact), and we will get back with you to answer your question or concern.

  • We use a custom Bible reading plan that covers one Gospel per quarter, with the other New Testament books in-between (in order). It is split up where we usually study half a chapter per night to get through the entire New Testament in a year. Every night as we end the study, we give the reading for the following night so everyone can read and study on their own if they want to do that.

  • No, you can use whatever Bible translation you wish, but we usually read from either the Legacy Standard Bible (LSB) or the English Standard Bible (ESV). The LSB is a more literal word-for-word translation very close to the NASB, and the original Greek, and the ESV is closer to a thought-for-thought translation, being slightly more readable.
